What Is a Continuous Emissions Monitoring System?

There are emissions in the air all of the time. Some aren’t going to harm you, while others might.

Because you need to know the difference (and your nose can’t always tell), you will need to have some sort of monitor in place to do the ‘sniffing’ for you. What you may need is a continuous emissions monitoring system, or CEMS.

Who needs one?

When you’re running a business that uses a lot of chemicals or handles activities that will produce potentially harmful pollutants, you may be required to have a continuous emissions monitoring system in your factory or plant facilities.

But that isn’t to say that you can’t have a similar system for your office space as well, especially when the likelihood of emissions is greater – i.e. city locations as well as certain areas of a building where other production is completed.

What will it do?

A continuous emissions monitoring system determines what is actually in the air at any given time and processes this information to be presentable as a part of a graphing program or other reports system.

This allows you to read the numbers and see if you are exceeding the requirements of the EPA – and if you need to take action to reduce the level of emissions in your facility.

When you have a continuous emissions monitoring system in place, you can also be able to show any regulators or inspectors the air quality conditions at your workplace.

What does this mean for you?

What a lot of people take for granted is that the air quality in their environment will always be the same – but this is not the case. This is why more businesses are turning to a continuous emissions monitoring system.

Not only will the system continue to monitor the air quality, but it will do so when you’re there as well as when you’re not there. Problems don’t necessarily limit themselves to the normal business hours. And you need to make sure that you are watching the air at all times.

With a continuous emissions monitoring system, you not only ensure that you are falling within EPA guidelines, but you also ensure that you and your employees are breathing in the best air for your body.
