The Importance of Industrial Air Quality

Too many times, we have seen the stories about workers that have fallen ill from air quality concerns in their workplace.

Miners have gotten lung disease while those that work with beryllium have also developed chronic lung problems. In order to prevent problems in your workplace, you will want to find out more about your industrial air quality and what’s being done to control it.

Checking with work safety

To start, you will need to determine which department is concerned with the industrial air quality in your workplace. Generally it is named something like work safety or work safety control.

The people that work in this department are also in charge of making sure that equipment is safe for the workers to use and that general working conditions are not presenting potential problems for those working in the area.

They are also in charge of maintaining safety regulations as determined by the city, state, and federal boards.

Something you can do today

While the employer should also be regulating the air quality around your workspace, there are instances when this isn’t possible. By following the guidelines set up by your employer, you can keep yourself safe and healthy.

    How to become involved

Many safety departments have volunteer positions open for employees that want to become involved with industrial air quality.

You might be able to attend seminars on how you can teach your fellow employees to keep their work stations clean as well as how to use protective equipment correctly. You can also learn about potential problems and how these problems should be dealt with.

Some employees can become liaisons between the workers and the safety employees. In this capacity, industrial air quality can become a workplace issue that isn’t relegated to just the safety department. Issues can be corrected as they are noticed.

If you’re unable to serve in that kind of capacity, you have a responsibility to let your employer know when there are industrial air quality issues.

When issues are not corrected, action can be taken against an employer to correct the issues and compensation can be awarded to for any worker that might suffer from conditions that are directly related to the air quality.

Steve Taub, an emission control specialist, is an expert in dealing with these kinds of issues and can help you get the information you need to better your workplace environment.
